Why 3M VHB beats generic double sided tape

Ordinary double adhesive tape uses a thin rubber or foam carrier that creeps under load and lets go in heat. VHB is a solid acrylic foam that behaves more like a weld: it spreads stress across the whole bonded area, flexes with vibration, and holds its grip through temperature swings. That is why it is used on signage, vehicle trim and shopfitting where a heavy duty two sided tape has to last.

How to get the strongest bond

• Clean both surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry fully. Grease, dust and silicone polish are the usual causes of failure.
• Apply between 21C and 38C where possible. Cold surfaces bond poorly.
• Press firmly along the full length for a few seconds - pressure, not time, starts the bond.
• Leave 24 hours before loading it properly. Bond strength keeps building for up to 72 hours.

How much weight will 3M double sided tape hold?
It depends on bonded area rather than roll length. As a rule of thumb, allow generous coverage for anything heavy, spread the tape across the full contact area rather than a few dabs, and support the item for the first 24 hours.

Will it work outdoors?
Yes, in sheltered exterior positions. It is waterproof and UV stable, though we would not recommend it for anything permanently exposed to driving rain and full sun on a critical load.

Which surfaces should I avoid?
Bare untreated timber, rough masonry, and low surface energy plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene. Powder-coated, painted, glass and metal surfaces are ideal.

How do I remove it?
Slice through the foam with fishing line or dental floss, then peel the residue away slowly. Gentle warmth from a hair dryer softens the adhesive.
